A Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 freighter had an accident on 28 July at 11.38 am (local time) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The freighter, Flight LH 8460, was on route from Frankfurt to Hong Kong with stopovers in Riyadh and Sharjah. Lufthansa Cargo continued its upward trend in the second quarter of the year with the first six months seeing the cargo airline carrying 830,000 tonnes of freight and mail, around 20 per cent more than in the first half 2009. Volume growth was particularly pronounced into and out of Asia as well as to America, the carrier said. DHL has expanded its air network with an Aerologic route linking the UAE to Asia and Europe. Lufthansa Cargo boosted freight traffic by 13.8 per cent in April from a year ago despite a five-day shutdown of its Frankfurt hub.
