Leading integrators DHL, TNT, FedEx and UPS need to reorganise their networks as a result of structural changes in the industry according to consulting firm Datamonitor. Asia Airfreight Terminal Co Ltd announced its tonnage throughput for May 2009 was 37,039 tonnes, down 31 per cent compared with the same month last year with AAT general manager, Planning & Services, Nelson Lee pointing to the opening of Fedex’s new Asia-Pacific Hub at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport as playing a significant part in the weak tonnage performance. The Chinese government on enacted a new postal law on 24 April that bars foreign companies from delivering domestic express letters. FedEx pulls 14 aircraft from service
FedEx Corp is pulling capacity as the ongoing downturn hits its global express business, with the US-based carrier announcing in a notice to the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this week that it will remove 10 Airbus A310-200s, four Boeing MD10-10s from service between now and the end of the quarter ending May 31.
