Dubai pax numbers up, cargo stable

Dubai International recorded an increase of 19.5 per cent in passenger traffic in September, the highest monthly growth rate since October 2007 and the fourth consecutive month of double-digit passenger traffic growth. Cargo growth remained stable in September with a modest increase of 2.75 per cent. Dubai International airport has continued to hang on to both cargo and passenger growth despite the continuing global downturn in air cargo and passenger movements with the airport holding on to its position among the world’s top five hubs for international cargo volumes. While much of the world is still reeling from the sharp decline in cargo volumes, Dubai International Airport has recorded only a small decline in cargo throughput of 0.76 per cent for the first six months of this year compared with the same period last year. Dubai International Airport has posted a 9.38 per cent increase in freight traffic year-on-year traffic in 2008, despite the worldwide economic slump and a slowdown in global travel demand. The airport handled 1,824,991 tonnes of cargo in 2008 compared with 1,668,505 tonnes of freight in 2007.
